This chapter talks a lot about asking questions since that's something we adults tend to do when talking to children. This is the chapter that helped me realize how asking too many questions can actually stop a conversation.

TA Chapter 3: Get Ready for Conversation: "Break the ICE"

The most important part of this chapter is the checklist that starts on page 40 to help you see how your child is Initiating conversations, Continuing conversations, and Ending conversations. I made a PDF version of these checklists since the program doesn't provide one.

ITTT Chapter 3: Follow Your Child's Lead

While chapter 2 covered "letting" your child lead, this chapter talks about "following" your child's lead. It helps you use the OWL strategy with more flexibility on your part so your child can focus on communication, instead of compliance. The handout for this chapter helps you break down all the pieces so that you can better follow your child's lead as they play.

The program doesn't have any handouts for this chapter, but I love the emphasis on examining our own communication and trying to aim for questions that are easier so I'm including "the mountain of questions" from the It Takes Two To Talk program.

I also really like the ideas on page 132 for what to expect from a child in each of the stages.
