While chapter 2 covered "letting" your child lead, this chapter talks about "following" your child's lead. It helps you use the OWL strategy with more flexibility on your part so your child can focus on communication, instead of compliance. The handout for this chapter helps you break down all the pieces so that you can better follow your child's lead as they play.

In my experience the most helpful part is on page 323 where it talks about making up songs just for your kids. I find that kids often like when you change a word/phrase in a familiar song to fit them (with the exception of some kids who insist on the routine and sameness of the songs).

Looking at the session handouts there actually aren't any for this chapter! It's a great example of why I now prefer the books over the actual programs since they've stopped including parts of the book!

The biggest takeaway from this chapter is the O.W.L. strategy, which encourages us all to get at a child's eye-level then stay quiet while we Observe what they're doing and say a word that matches that. Then we Wait for about 10 seconds to see how the child will respond and Listen with our eyes as well as our ears to then repeat the process.

The first time I read this I found that I was a "Tester" and was shocked to learn how that can get in the way of a child's communication. It took me a while to get to the "Tuned-In" role that I'm at today, though I still slip back into a "Tester" on some days.

I love pages 29-31 since they give a lot of ideas of ways to wait.
